Head Coach Opening for 2025/2026 Season

HEAD COACH JOB ANNOUNCEMENT/DESCRIPTION 2025-2026
West Potomac High School (Fairfax County Public Schools) is a public high school located in Alexandria, Virginia. The West Potomac Crew program includes a diverse, vibrant group of 50-75  9th-12th grade girls and boys in novice and varsity. The program is dedicated to providing a supportive environment for the athletes to establish bonds, build confidence and sportsmanship to work cohesively together to achieve a common goal.  
The West Potomac High School Crew is seeking a head coach for the 2025-2026  spring season to lead the team in providing a space for student rowers to learn to love the sport and grow their collaboration and team skills and self-confidence. The head coach is supported by 4-7 part time coaches. We are seeking an inspirational leader and positive role model to help drive the culture of the program to instill a competitive yet collaborative environment for all.   This is a wonderful opportunity for an individual who is passionate about rowing, coaching and community.  
Location:
West Potomac High School (WPHS) Alexandria VA – Winter Conditioning and Land Training
Fort Belvoir Marina – Rowing site
Work Type: Part-time, Seasonal 
  • Flexible schedule – administrative work August – November
  • December-February, Approx 3 days/week weekday afternoons
  • March – May (season), Weekday afternoons/early evening (practice)  and Saturdays (regattas)
  • Fairfax County Public Schools Spring Break -  spring break rowing camp March 30-April 3, 2026
Pay Basis:
Independent Contractor
Competitive salary based on skill and experience
Essential Job Functions:
  1. Recruits, hires, leads, and supervises a staff of 4-7 coaches split between novice and varsity teams.
  2. Develops training and conditioning programs for winter conditioning and spring competitive seasons. Provides leadership in the ongoing development and improvement of the program.
  3. Schedules and conducts practices and training sessions. Draws from a strong working knowledge of crew and rowing to plan and facilitate daily, meaningful practices, and execute effective teaching/coaching techniques during races.
  4. Develops competition schedules. Submits race entries in a timely manner. Coordinates regatta travel needs with the West Potomac Crew Boosters Vice President of Operations.
  5. Supports and assists the Crew Boosters and Student Officers with recruiting and fundraising.
  6. Provides guidance to the  Crew Boosters for budget development, as well as  maintenance, purchases,and controls of equipment and materials. 
  7. Attends monthly Crew Booster board meetings and other team functions and special events.  
  8. Responsible for appropriate behavior and safety of team members and coaches
  9. Responsible for maintaining the facility/rowing site during use. 
  10. Provides guidance to Crew Boosters operational for inventory and maintenance of rowing and fitness equipment (e.g. rowing shells, oars, rowing machines, launch boats, trailer, safety equipment.
  11. Follows, and ensures team compliance with VASRA (rowing league), USRowing, West Potomac High School/Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) and Fort Belvoir policies, procedures, rules, and regulations.
  12. Complies with safety policies and procedures and standards of care. Coordinates safety training and practice drills as needed. Helps evolve safety policies and procedures to ensure they are up-to-date and applicable.
  13. Performs other duties as assigned
Illustrative Responsibilities:
  • Sets high expectations for learning, achievement, and character development.
  • Provides timely feedback to student-athletes and offers specialized support in pursuit of each athlete’s goals.
  • Recruits and hires coaches and assistants with approval of the Crew Boosters and Fairfax County Public Schools.
  • Collaborates with the WPHS Activities Director and Activities Department staff to:
    • Ensure all athletes have completed Athletic Registration and other FCPS/WPHS requirements for participation prior to participating in training, practices and competitions
    • Ensure all coaches have completed required training  
    • Coordinate space use at WPHS
  • Works with athletes and any college recruiting offices for input/guidance and/or written recommendations at the athlete’s request.
  • Provides information to team members/families about out-of-season and summer activities and training.
  • Educates coaches, parents and athletes in all aspects of rowing techniques and best practices.
Required Qualifications, Skills and Abilities:
  • Minimum two (2) years coaching experience at high school, college or club level.
  • Prior experience in a rowing or coxswain capacity and knowledge of internal rowing language.
  • USRowing active membership and current SafeSport Certification required prior to the start of the rowing season. Level 1/Level 2 Coach Certification preferred.
  • FCPS Coaching Certifications (after hire)
  • Boating license and ability to drive and operate motorized boats/launch, safely navigating waterways with boat traffic from private boats and commercial vessels.
  • Passion for athletic competition and the ability to motivate and inspire athletes.
  • Ability to constructively collaborate and communicate clearly with both adults and children in a positive spirit. 
  • Ability and knowledge to oversee and coordinate rowing equipment maintenance.
  • Leadership and mentoring skills for coaches and athletes. 
  • Cultural competency skills to collaborate effectively across differences.
  • Commitment to building a diverse, equitable and inclusive school community.
  • Strong working knowledge of student cognitive development and learning preferences.
  • Personal traits appropriate for nurturing the growth of children - fun, energetic, creative, flexible, and patient.

West Potomac Crew needs your help! As part of our 2025 regatta season, we are required to fill 32 volunteer positions to support race operations. This is a great opportunity to be part of the action and help ensure a successful season for our rowers.  It is also mandatory for us as a team, so if you're not already volunteering for us this is a great way to fulfill your volunteering obligation.

Job descriptions are available on the VASRA website. Most roles require no prior experience or physical exertion, but please review the job notes before signing up. One exception is for “Launch Boat Drivers.” If you sign up for this role, you must attend a mandatory training session on a Saturday in March (dates TBD).  And you won't miss your kid's race!  If your child's race is during your shift, let the VASRA organizer know—they will accommodate you.
